Scholarship award may go up to $3000 and be commensurate with the number and quality of applications. Applicants who are determined to study abroad for a summer or longer are encouraged to apply. New Course - SAST 1559: India in Global Perspective

Since the 1990s, India has taken dramatic steps to reform its economic policies and reset its relationships with other world powers. India is the fourth largest economy, currently the largest purchaser of military hardware, an established leader in information technology, offshore business services, implementing aggressive domestic infrastructure projects, and much more. Students will be introduced to a wide range of initiatives in a variety of public and privates sectors, and will be encouraged through focused case studies to learn about opportunities for them to discover their own interests, possibly by studying with the UVA in India program. Some of the lectures will be delivered by UVA faculty who have on-going engagement with India through their research. Through this course, students can imagine in what ways they can take full advantage of a learning experience in India and convert it into a career.

Classical Arabic Literature Faculty Position at UVA
The College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, with 10,000 students and 750 faculty members, is the largest of the University of Virginia's 11 schools and is the institution's intellectual core. The UVa Arts & Sciences Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures invites applicants for a tenure-track /tenured position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Arabic Literature. Field of specialization is classical Arabic literature before 1800 with a special emphasis on poetry or prose, subfield of specialization open. Outstanding scholarship with a superior record of scholarly publications commensurate to rank, evidence of excellent teaching, and commitment to interdisciplinary work are required. The successful candidate must have native or near-native fluency in Arabic and English, and must hold a Ph.D. in Arabic literature, preferably with training in comparative literature, at the time of the position's start date on August 25, 2015. Language proficiency in Persian, Urdu, and other classical languages is an advantage, and so is the ability to ground one's research in literary theory as well as the broader debates in the field and the Humanities more generally. We are looking for a colleague who will participate actively and fully in both the undergraduate and graduate programs in the department.

Hassan, Mahvash & Farzad Milani Scholarship for MESALC Students
Thanks to the generosity of the Hassan, Mahvash & Farzad Milani Charitable Trust, the Department of Middle Eastern & South Asian Languages & Cultures is offering a $4,000 scholarship during the Spring semester of 2015 to a graduate or undergraduate student majoring, minoring, or taking courses in the Department. The scholarship is open to both needs-based and merit-based recipients although preference will be given to those receiving financial aid. Eligible students must be enrolled full time.
